Caruso's Green Tip of the Day!

With the school year almost coming to a close and summer right around the corner, parents look ahead to plenty of hot summer days out on the road with the kids in the car. Just how hot those days can be may not hit you until you open the door of a car that's been baking for hours in a parking lot. The fun really starts when the little ones have to get in. Here is where your new solar powered car gadget comes into play.
In these fuel-conscious times, when consumers may think twice before cranking the AC, one alternative is a solar powered car ventilator. Susita makes a model called the TO-230. It's basically a small fan weighing 1-1/2 pounds that goes on top of a car window, with a solar panel facing outward.
The solar panel, which is 5 inches by 4.5 inches, powers the fan, which exchanges hot air inside the car for the presumably cooler air outside. If you park in the shade and want to use the fan, there's a plug-in adapter for the car.
*The fan can reduce your parked car's interior temperature from 25 degrees all the way to 160-180 degrees depending on where your car is parked. And that's your green tip of the day!

Save Money on a Summer Trip!

Summer is almost here! Looking to plan a summer trip but cash conscious? Or just plain mad about gas prices (again)? Don't Sweat!
OC residents...Why not consider a local summer trip for a vacation? We live in such a beautiful part of Southern California, sometimes we are all too caught up in our lives to realize we already live in a vacation desination.
Dana Point hosts 2 world class hotels: Ritz Carlton and St. Regis, which besides being groegous hotels with stunning ocean views and spectacular swimming pools, they have fabulous tide pools to explore, a major harbor where you can rent a jet ski, a kayak try scuba diving or take a ride on a historical ship. There are also dolphin and whale boat tours and fishing boats leave daily for those who want to cook up fresh fish for dinner. And don't forget a surfboard...the waves are great!
Dana Point also has several great camp sites that are very clean (San Onofre State Beach Campground and San Mateo Campground nearby) which are popular and you can still scoot over to your favorite restaurant for dinner while being near the beach campground. With summer right around the corner, enjoy a summer night with a campfire at the Doheny Beach fire pits and BBQ your dinner.
Nearby, you can go horseback riding at San Juan Capistrano or visit the historical Mission San Juan Capistrano.
And don't forget Disneyland is just a 20 minute car ride away which is fun for the entire family!
You can beat the gas prices and beat the summer heat and have a great time in coastal Orange County. Still feeling overwhelmed? No worries! Call my office and we'll be happy to provide maps and any information you made need.

Moving with Kids

Moving can be a very exciting and fun time while others consider moving a stressful and difficult experience. Have you ever wondered though, how moving can affect your children? It can be a lot harder for younger kids to understand moving and leaving everything they know. With many years of Real Estate experience here are some tips I have found very useful to help your children deal with moving.

Start by making a scrapbook of photographs of the old home, neighborhood, school, church, friends, family and going away parties. Assure them that you won't forget their friends. Have a good-bye party where their friends autograph a t-shirt and write their addresses on index cards. Have your children hand out goodbye notes with their new address as well. These tips show them that you are just moving houses/towns not lifestyles and will help them feel more secure with the transition.

Make sure you keep talking to them about what's going on. Young children and busy teenagers are not always paying attention when you tell them important information plus most likely they want to know what's going on. If you can, take them the home you've purchased. If this cannot be done, ask for a video or photographs so you can show your child where they are going and that there is nothing "scary" about it. Involve your children when communicating your expectations, goals, wants and needs. Picking out their rooms or planning on where their furniture & toys are going to go can also help your child feel more involved

Lastly, I highly recommend avoiding moving during the school year. It can be very tough to start a new school in the middle of the year. Ideally, move 1-3 months before a new school year begins. Also do not put children, even teenagers, in charge of preparing, moving, or keeping track of pets.

I hope these tips can help you and your families have a fun and easy move!

St. Patrick's Day, Irish Symbols and Traditions...

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day, celebrated on March 17.

St. Patrick's Day was established as a religious feast day in honor of the death of St. Patrick, Ireland's patron saint. Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish and lots of fun!

Irish Symbols and Traditions...

Leprechaun

The St Patrick's Day symbol, the leprechaun is a smiling, merry little elf. Legend tells us that leprechauns are always grumpy, untrustworthy and very tricky. Leprechauns are believed to be little old men who make shoes for fairies and are usually about two feet tall. The legend says that if you catch a leprechaun, you can force them to tell you where they hid their pot of gold.

Shamrocks

According to Irish legend, St. Patrick chose a shamrock or a three leaved clover as a symbol of the church's Holy Trinity because of its three leaflets. He used it to help illustrate the idea of the holy trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. A shamrock is not a four leaf clover.

Four leaf Clover

When a four leaf clover is found it is said to bring you good luck and it also represents God's grace. The good luck attached with the four leaf clover goes back to the ancient Druid priests.

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Corned beef and cabbage is the traditional meal enjoyed by many on St. Patrick's Day, but only half of it is truly Irish. Cabbage has long been a staple of the Irish diet, but it was traditionally served with Irish bacon, not corned beef. The corned beef was substituted for bacon by Irish immigrants to the Americas around the turn of the century who could not afford the real thing.

Can you think of any other St. Patrick Day traditions or symbols? I can think of 3 more…

Cinnamon & Honey

Cinnamon and Honey - Whoever thought? Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. It will do what some call turning to sugar. In reality honey is always honey. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will do what I rather call "crystallizing" When this happens I loosen the lid, boil some water, and sit the honey container in the hot water, turn off the heat and let it liquefy. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. To do so will kill the enzymes in the honey. Keeping a jar of honey in the sun will bring it back to its original liquid state.
Cinnamon and Honey Bet the drug companies won't like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a 'Ram Ban' (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases.
Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada , in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists:
HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack... Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada , various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins.
ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.
BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm waterand drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder..
CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.
COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses.
UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.
GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan , it is revealed that if Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.
IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacterial andviral diseases.
INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.
INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ' Ingredient' which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.
LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increase and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old..
PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root.
SKIN INFECTIONS: Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.
WEIGHT LOSS: Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.
CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month three times a day.
FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body.. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts, are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week.
BAD BREATH: People of South America , first thing in the morning, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water, so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.
HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!

Eco-Friendly Kitchens

The kitchen is the heart of every home, because it provides a place for sustenance and good conversation and family pow-wows. If you're current kitchen isn't one that meets your needs, a green upgrade is probably what it could use. In addition to being able to customize your kitchen to your liking, you will also be able to decrease your electricity bill and preserve your food for longer.
Here are some tips that can help you remodel your kitchen in an eco-friendly way.
Purchase energy-efficient appliance. Your refrigerator is a big consumer of electricity, because it has to run all of the time. However, by installing a certified energy efficient dishwasher, over, refrigerator, freezer, etc., you will see a large decrease in your monthly electric bill. Once you get the large appliances green, you can work on the smaller ones like the toaster oven, blender, and other devices you use on a regular basis.
Install more efficient lighting but try to rely on natural light as much as you can. So first, make sure your windows are free of blinds and drapes during the day. If you have any plants or large furniture or decorations in the way of the window, move them somewhere else. Then you can put compact fluorescent (CFLs) light bulbs in your existing lighting fixtures.
Improve existing cabinetry and cupboards by stripping and repainting them. You would be surprised how much different they can look with a new paint job and hardware. If this isn't an option, go with ones made from renewable resources and recycled materials such as wheatboard and bamboo.
Enhance the kitchen with hypoallergenic materials. In other words, avoid paints with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other products that will decrease your air quality.
