Healthy Eating Tips for the Super Bowl

So I know the last thing anyone wants to hear is don’t indulge and drink / eat a lot on the day of super bowl, but what if you can enjoy yourself just as much without going home and feeling as if you are in a food / beverage coma and need to fast for the next week! Here are some helpful pointers that will hopefully help you enjoy your day and not feel ill by the end!

•Avoid creamy dips that are loaded with fat. If you are hosting your own party, mix yogurt with avocado and herbs for a healthier dip. Don’t offer greasy chips, put out delicious pita or baked chips.
◦Here is a wonderful website for delicious Creole food for all of you Saints fans! http://www.epicurious.com/articlesguides/howtocook/cuisines/cajuncreolerecipes

•If you are going elsewhere, eat before you go to the party, or the bar. If you’re going to a potluck, bring a vegetarian dish. Carrots and tomatoes are a delicious way to eat but stay healthy. You can also bring a fruit platter, many of times the sugar in berries can replace those fatty dessert urges.

•Work out before your day begins! Your metabolism will feel boosted and usually you don’t want to stuff your face with unhealthy food after a good workout. Experts say exercise “sets the tone for the whole day.” “You don’t want to ruin that good feeling and hard work. It makes you more cautious about what you eat the rest of the day.”

•Get up and do something during breaks in the game. Go take a walk outside, socialize with someone you haven’t or maybe even grab a glass or water to keep yourself hydrated like the players on the field!

•Another delicious treat that is low in calories and can still be jazzed up by adding different spices and toppings is popcorn. Throw in some air-popped popcorn, which has only about 90 calories and 1.5 grams of fat per serving; you can even throw in a handful of M&M’s to make it a bit more dessert like and the snack will still be healthier compared to grabbing countless handfuls of those chocolaty delights!

•Finally, if all else fails (haha) put the food in a room where the TV is not. This will cause you to realize what you are eating, be less inclined to pick because there are not snacks in front that allow you to eat handfuls, and you will be forced to get up and walk around if you are hungry enough!

Of course these are just suggestions and I am not by any means discouraging you from indulging a little bit, but being aware of what you are eating and keeping everything in moderation will allow you to enjoy the Super Bowl and not be kicking yourself for the 5 days following.
