International Surfing Day!

Surfers from all coastlines are encouraged to celebrate the 8th annual International Surfing Day on Sunday June 19, 2011. Originally created by Surfing Magazine and the Surfrider Foundation in 2004, International Surfing Day or ISD is an opportunity for board riders from across the globe to enjoy a day of surfing, environmental awareness, surf classes, clinics, contests, demos, surf film screenings, premiers, beach clean-ups, BBQs, benefit concert and after parties!!

Each year since the beginning, the ISD has steadily increased in popularity throughout the coastal regions of the world. Although it's incredibly popular in America's coastal states, Europe & Australia, the ISD is also celebrated on every populated continent. Surfers from the distant shores of Morocco and Ghana in Africa, Korea and Taiwan in Asia, Israel and Italy in the Mediterranean, and even the Great Lakes of the United Sates will join in this year's festivities.

Local environmental organizations, the Surfrider Foundation's local chapters, and other surfing related organizations and businesses all team up to provide fun and rewarding events for surfers in each region. Much like Earth Day, each region organizes their specific schedule of events for ISD. Check out http://www.surfrider.org/ for your chapter's event schedule or Surfing Magazine for details on ISD 2011 for your area.

Over 100 Surfrider Foundation chapters from around the world participated in last year's ISD. This year, ISD is proud to have the surf industries biggest brands stepping up pro athlete and company participation.

If you can't make it to an organized ISD event, then why not make your own?! Gather your surfing or beach loving friends for a BBQ at your favorite local beach. Try and invite people that have not yet had the opportunity to learn to surf and share the gift of riding waves with them.

Whether you're taking pleasure from participating in an organized ISD event or conducting your own the point of ISD is for everyone to paddle out, catch some fun waves together, spread ocean & environmental awareness and clean the beaches. Your choice of surf craft is irrelevant. Short boards, long boards, standup paddleboards, body boards, skim boards, it doesn't matter! Get out to the beach and be part of the worldwide all day surf party!
