Caruso's *9/11 REMEMBRANCE* OC Happenings

NORTH COUNTY


ANAHEIM
The city will mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a remembrance featuring a speech by the brother of Charles “Chic” Burlingame, the pilot of American Airlines Flight 77, which was crashed into the Pentagon. Chic Burlingame and his brother Brad Burlingame grew up in Anaheim. The memorial service is planned for 12:30 p.m. at the Pearson Park Amphitheatre, 401 N. Lemon St. Information: anaheim.net. The Angels play the Yankees. An American flag will be unfurled prior to the 12:35 p.m. game in a ceremony that will include first responders from several Southern California agencies.

BREA

Commemorate the heroes of Sept. 11 with an evening of special guests, music and remembrances at the Brea Olinda High School Stadium. Admission is free. Activities begin at 5 p.m. when the gates open for picnicking and music. The ceremony starts at 7 p.m. Brea’s police, fire and military also will be honored.

BUENA PARK

FULLERTON
On Sept. 10 and Sept. 11, retired New York firefighter Joe Finley, whose company lost nine men in the Sept. 11 attacks, will speak to the Eastside Christian Church congregation in Fullerton. There are several services. Finley assisted with rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.

GARDEN GROVE

Garden Grove Elks Lodge, 11551 Trask Ave., is working with the other Orange Coast District lodges to coordinate an event open to public. Gates open at noon. Ceremony starts at about 2 p.m.

LA HABRA

There will be a 9/11 10th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony at 7 a.m. at Constitution Park, 1150 E. Whittier Blvd. There will be several speakers. Information: 562-905-9708.

LA PALMA

A commemoration ceremony will be held in the courtyard area of City Hall. The 7 p.m. event will include a POW/MIA table ceremony, placement of a wreath, a commemorative 9/11 presentation and a candlelight ceremony. WESTMINSTER

The annual Family Day event is set for 1-5 p.m. at Sigler Park, 7200 Plaza St. In conjunction with Dia de la Familia, the mayor and City Council will recognize the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11. YORBA LINDA

On Sept. 9, at the Nixon library there will be educational presentations featuring members of the Armed Forces and 9/11 first-responders sharing tales of heroism. Speakers include: Angie Kardashian, noted volunteer restaurateur who quit a successful catering career in Yorba Linda to serve first-responding firefighters at Ground Zero; Air Force Col. Wayne Scott, who participated in the Air Force's planning response to 9/11; and Kris Kawai of the Los Angeles Fire Department, who left California to join the rescue efforts at Ground Zero. All presentations are free and open to the public. Also at Nixon library there will be a 10th anniversary remembrance ceremony featuring a military honor guard, patriotic musical presentations by local choir groups, remarks by Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, and stories of bravery by 9/11 survivor and first-responder New York firefighter Joe Torrillo, who survived the collapse of both towers. The Interfaith Council of North Orange County is holding its 10th annual Light the Darkness ceremony. The program will include a keynote speech by Rabbi Frank Stern, performances by the Celebration USA Choir and Yorba Linda Presbyterian Church Bell Choir and “inspirational thoughts from the community.” The public event starts at 7 p.m. at Jessamyn West Park at the corner of Yorba Linda Boulevard and Palm Avenue. CENTRAL COUNTY

COSTA MESA

The city will host a remembrance ceremony 9-11 a.m. at the U.S. Army Reserve Center, 2651 Newport Blvd. Guest speakers from the Costa Mesa police and fire departments will be in attendance. A flag folding ceremony will be conducted by the Tustin Young Marines. Volunteer Commitment Fair at South Coast Plaza from noon to 4 p.m. nonprofit groups will gather for the ninth annual People Helping People Festival, encouraging community engagement through volunteerism. This year, residents can make volunteer commitments of at least one hour per month for the upcoming year. “I will” pledges can be made onsite with local nonprofit groups, by signing up to give blood to the American Red Cross or online through OneOC. This event is free to nonprofit exhibitors and all South Coast Plaza guests. Volunteers will receive a special thank you and will have the opportunity to participate in the 9/11 tribute ceremony at 1:15 p.m. at the South Coast Drive entry.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY

HUNTINGTON BEACH

Patriots Day Ceremony starts at 6 p.m. at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway at pier plaza. The event will commemorate the sacrifices of veterans and first responders. Information: Huntington Beach American Legion Post 133, 714-536-3855.

IRVINE

The city will host a Day of Remembrance 4-5 p.m. at Northwood Community Park at the site of the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial, corner of Bryan and Yale. Irvine Valley College has an annual observance at noon. Concordia University will host “9/11: Ten Years Later,” an afternoon of speakers and a remembrance ceremony with music. Woodbridge Community Church will host an informal afternoon gathering at North Lake Park. The noon-4 p.m. event will consist of prayer and remembrance. Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic. “Lumen 9.11: Then, Now, Next – What Does Peacemaking Look Like Ten Years Later?” explores multicultural reconciliation through a series of presentations and panel discussions by Muslim and Christian authors, artists and commentators. The event is scheduled 2-5 p.m. at Mariners Church in Irvine, and is open to all members of the community. Admission is free. A special event highlight is Kevin James, a Muslim who will share his experiences as one of the first New York Fire Department responders on 9/11. The members of Christ Our Redeemer AME Church celebrate the work of OCFA, Orange County Sheriff’s Department and Irvine Police Department at COR Church, 46 Maxwell. LOS ALAMITOS

American Legion Post 716, 3252 Florista St., is holding a flag retirement ceremony at 11 a.m. followed by a barbecue. The post is at 3252 Florista Street. As well as, the OCFA Remembrance Service. NEWPORT BEACH

The 9-11 Memorial Concert for the Community, will be starting at 7pm at St. James Church. St. James Anglican Church will host a free 9-11 memorial concert, “Sorrow, Resilience & Hope” with the superb 40-member Orange County Collegiate Orchestra. The players are the finest undergraduate and post-graduate musicians in Orange County. Everyone is invited to attend. There will be free childcare for children five and under and a reception will follow the concert. ORANGE

Chapman University is hosting a remembrance event at 6 p.m. at Fish Interfaith Center.

SANTA ANA

On Sept. 10, Generations of Service will be held at Monte Vista Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Help inspire service and learning by bridging the generational gap. Join state Sen. Lou Correa, the Young Senators Program and local veterans for a beautification project at the school. A mural will be painted commemorating 9/11 events and veterans and instilling the value of volunteerism. On Sept. 10, nonprofit groups will host the “Change Santa Ana Feed 2000” event. The free food distribution event is first come, first served for Santa Ana resident families. Registration begins at 7 a.m.; distribution will run 11 a.m.-5 p.m. or until food is completely disbursed. Grocery carts are not permitted, families are also required to have one adult per household sign for food package and provide a personal grocery bag and/or box if possible. The effort is a collaboration between Community Action Partnership of Orange County, Loaves & Fishesx10, Serve the People, Hand in Hand Outreach, and Manassero Farms. Remember 9/11 the Ride. Motorcycle ride led by Long Beach firefighter Gary Biggerstaff from Cook’s Corner in Trabuco Canyon to McKenna's on the Bay in Long Beach. LAGUNA BEACH
There will be a public art dedication and ceremony at 11 a.m. at Monument Point in Heisler Park. “Semper Memento” by Jorg Dubin is a sculpture created with two beams from the World Trade Center. Also, the New York and New Jersey Port Authority Police Department is flying an American Flag over Ground Zero, and the flag will be presented to the city at the Semper Memento dedication ceremony.

The city will host a Day of Remembrance at 8 a.m. at 200 Civic Center. During the ceremony led by local scout troops, flags will be raised and lowered to half-staff. Representatives from OCSD and OCFA will give short presentations. Presbyterian Church of the Master at Oso and Marguerite parkways will present an evening of music at 6 p.m. that will include patriotic and sacred songs presented by a choir and orchestra under the direction of John Elg. Vocal solos by Glenn Ellington, David Wells, Rozlyn Mignogna and other professional singers will be accompanied by composer and pianist Gene Roberson and orchestra. RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA


On Sept. 10, the city will welcome the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines to commemorate Patriot Day and mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The 2/5, the city’s adopted battalion, will be hosting a display where the public can meet Marines and get a close-up view of military vehicles and weaponry. The free event is 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at City Hall, 22112 El Paseo. At 11 a.m., the mayor and City Council members, local Scouts, American Legion Post 862 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6024 will hold a flag ceremony and a 21-gun salute and taps will be played. The family of Cpl. Jordan Stanton, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in March, will be attending. Stanton had joined the military as a result of 9/11. As well as the OCFA Remembrance Service. The services will be held at the flag pole in front of each Orange County Fire Authority station. SAN CLEMENTE

The city is preparing a commendation and will take part in a nationwide moment of remembrance at 1 p.m. at the Marine Monument in Park Semper Fi, 106 Alameda Lane. San Clemente Mayor Lori Donchak has issued a proclamation declaring Sunday to be Patriot Day in the city and asks residents to observe a moment of silence.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
San Juan Capistrano will host a 9/11 Day of Remembrance at 8 a.m. Sunday at Historic Town Center Park, 31806 El Camino Real, including an Orange County Sheriff's Department color guard and bugler, Orange County Fire Authority fire trucks, an invocation by Monsignor Arthur Holquin of Mission San Juan Capistrano and comments by Mayor Sam Allevato, Fire Services Chief Keith Richter and Sheriff Sandra Hutchens. At 8:45 a.m., the mission bells will ring to signify when the first hijacked plane hit the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. Students from Capistrano Valley Christian Schools will sing “God Bless America” and the Rev. Phil DeVaul will give a closing prayer. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.
