So you want to know who's the greenest of them all......
Los Angeles.
So says a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study that ranked the 25 greenest cities in the United States for 2009.
Where other rankings look at walkabilty, transportation and other measures, the EPA, for its second annual ranking, assessed cities based on the number of efficient buildings that earned EPA's ENERGY STAR label last year.
Los Angeles snagged the top spot, as it did last year, thanks to 293 buildings in the city that earned the ENERGY STAR label during 2009.
The other cites rounding out the top five were Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Denver and Chicago. They were followed by Houston, Lakeland, Fla., Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta and New York.
Among the newcomers to the list were San Diego, Calif., Ogden, Utah., Indianapolis, Ind., Des Moines, Ia., Fort Collins, Colo., and Louisville, Ky.
In 2009, nearly 3,900 commercial buildings earned the ENERGY STAR label, representing annual savings of more than $900 million in utility bills and more than 4.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, according to the EPA.
Last month, the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) also outlined plans to improve the ENERGY STAR program.
One indication that a change was needed came just after the EPA and DOE announcement.
In late March, a news story broke that indicated that some distinctly un-green-and phony-products received the ENERGY STAR label.
An example of one fake product that got certified was a gasoline-powered alarm clock.
The new approach entails more stringent testing.
For example, the DOE started testing on six of the most common product types, including freezers, clothes washers and room air conditioners, and will test approximately 200 basic models at third-party, independent test laboratories.
The EPA and DOE also will require all products seeking the ENERGY STAR label to be tested in approved labs and manufacturers will have to participate in an ongoing verification testing program to ensure continued compliance.
